ADANE-AKANIE-20152015 Age 27

Adane has graduated with a BSc in Agriculture and Rural Extension

Adane is interested in setting up his own chicken rearing farm.

As good chicken is not presently available in Lalibela, Ben Abeba Restaurant is happy to support him in this venture.

He is working on his Business Plan and will then look for funding to set up his business.

Continuing Undergraduates 2014

12 of our continuing students are in the University system this year. 7 of them are scheduled to graduate in July 2015 and we wish them every success.

As all our students are from very poor backgrounds, often with illiterate parents, their success is amazing. They all have a thirst for education and will hopefully have a future very different from that of their parents.

It has been agreed that all these students will get a monthly payment of 600 birr with 2 performance related bonuses paying up to 400 birr each.

Continuing Undergraduates 2013

10 of our continuing students are in the University system this year. The main reason for this is that we are now in our 5th year and our students are working hard, succeeding and moving on.

Adane must win the prize for determination!

He was one of our very first students when the fund started in 2009. His mother died one month before the grade 10 national exams and he did not do well enough to get into grade 11. His funding from us stopped and he was our only ‘failure’ in the first year.

He resat his grade 10 exam in 2010 without success but, in 2011, at the third attempt, he succeeded and went into grade 11. He has just started studying natural resource and agriculture at North Wollo University.

It has been agreed to let him rejoin the scholarship fund. He will get 600 birr per month + 2 performance related bonuses of up to 400 birr each.

Adane is one of 6 children. His family are farmers. His performance at elementary school was excellent and he progressed to secondary school 3 years ago. He was ranked number 1 in grade 9. During grade 10, his mother died and, as his father is old, this put a lot of pressure on him to support the family.

His results in the grade 10 National exam were not good enough to let him progress to grade 11. Last year he joined the Vocational school in Lalibela to study Surveying. He had to drop out as he did not have enough money to pay the fees, or to live. ( I do not have the price of my mouth!) He resat the National exam this year and has obtained high enough marks to go to teacher training college and study for a Diploma in teaching.

It has been agreed to give him 900 Birr every month (£45), with an incentive bonus of 600 Birr on successful completion of semester 1 and another 600 Birr on successful completion of first year.
