Continuing Undergraduates 2015

12 of our continuing students are in the University system this year. 9 of them are scheduled to graduate in July 2016 and we wish them every success.

As all our students are from very poor backgrounds, often with illiterate parents, their success is amazing. They all have a thirst for education and will hopefully have a future very different from that of their parents.

It has been agreed that all these students will get a monthly payment of 600 birr with 2 performance related bonuses paying up to 400 birr each.

Continuing Students 2015

3 of our grade 10 students did not get a place in grade 11. This is the stage of a large cut off. There are approximately 3,000 students in grade 10 and 300 places in grade 11.

The 2 girls, Yeshimet Sete Zebegna  and Desta Mengistu Tadie, have decided not to join the further education college and have left the fund. We are delighted to have supported them to the level of grade 10 education, a level that many young girls don’t attain.

So this year we have 4 continuing students still in the school system.

Mareg Agaze

MAREG-AGAZE-20152015 Age 21

It has been agreed to continue his support for this year. He will get 600 Birr every month.

Continuing Undergraduates 2014

12 of our continuing students are in the University system this year. 7 of them are scheduled to graduate in July 2015 and we wish them every success.

As all our students are from very poor backgrounds, often with illiterate parents, their success is amazing. They all have a thirst for education and will hopefully have a future very different from that of their parents.

Bude Methodist Church 2014

The Bude Methodist church in England are continuing their sponsorship of young people studying in the medical field. The Susan Aitchison scholarship fund is managing payments to the students on their behalf.

2015 will see all 3 of these students graduating and, hopefully, finding employment within the Ethiopian health service.

In January, we will display a notice in the local preparatory school inviting applications for support to start in September 2015. If the current currency exchange rate continues, we should be able to support 4 students studying in health related areas.

Continuing Undergraduates 2013

10 of our continuing students are in the University system this year. The main reason for this is that we are now in our 5th year and our students are working hard, succeeding and moving on.

Adane Akanie

ADANE-AKANIE-20122012 Aged 24 years

Adane must win the prize for determination!

He was one of our very first students when the fund started in 2009. His mother died one month before the grade 10 national exams and he did not do well enough to get into grade 11. His funding from us stopped and he was our only ‘failure’ in the first year.

He resat his grade 10 exam in 2010 without success but, in 2011, at the third attempt, he succeeded and went into grade 11. He has just started studying natural resource and agriculture at North Wollo University.

It has been agreed to let him rejoin the scholarship fund. He will get 600 birr per month + 2 performance related bonuses of up to 400 birr each.

Yonas Gedamu Tesfaye

YONAS-GEDAMU-TESFAYE-20112011 Age 21 years

He has just completed second year and has scored an amazing 3.7 out of a possible 4. He is now in his third year and his dream is becoming a reality, thanks to our support.

He has found it difficult to manage this year on 600 Birr per month and both committees have agreed to make him an exception and up his monthly payment to 900 Birr. He will also receive two performance related bonuses of a possible 400 Birr each.
